Knife Defense Techniques

Thrusting Knife #1

  • Assume left horse stance left step drag to the left with a right knife hand block to wrist
  • Grab wrist box step into right half moon stance left palm strike to elbow (show strike over arm)
  • Follow up with left palm strike to the temple Kiai!
  • (Advanced version left forearm)

Thrusting Knife #2

  • Assume horse stance right step drag to the right with left knife hand block to wrist while right hand is held high ready to do block#3
  • Left hand grabs wrist box step into left half moon stance right hammer to bicep followed up with right shuto to neck Kiai!

Thrusting Knife #3

  • Assume left horse stance
  • Your partner should have their left foot forward and the knife should be in their right hand
  • Your partner will step toward you with their right foot as they execute a stabbing knife attack to the stomach
  • Step out to the left like DM#7 with right hand checking opponent’s wrist then side blade kick to opponent’s knee Kiai!

Thrusting Knife #4

  • Stand opposite your partner with your hands up in front of you in a surrender position
  • Your partner should have their left foot forward and the knife should be in their right hand
  • Your partner will step toward you with their right foot as they execute a stabbing knife attack to the stomach
  • Step out to the right then left side thrust kick to opponent’s solar plexus Kiai!

Thrusting Knife #5

  • Assume horse stance right foot steps into side horse with left palm parry block grab opponent’s wrist
  • Execute right leopard’s paw to back of opponents hand then left side kick to ribs Kiai!

Thrusting Knife #6

  • Assume horse stance Right foot steps back and left foot draws into a cat stance facing the opponent with a left downward parry across the body with the fingers pointed downward
  • Left hand grabs the Hand of the opponent holding the knife
  • Left foot step drags out simultaneously bringing the hand holding the knife behind the opponent
  • Deliver a right ridge hand to opponent’s elbow of the arm that is holding the knife while simultaneously driving the knife into opponent kidney and Kiai!

Thrusting Knife #8

  • Assume horse stance
  • Left downward palm
  • Right downward knife block
  • Right hand hooks under opponent’s arm into arm-bar

Thrusting Knife #9

  • Fight foot hinges backward into a side horse stance while executing a #4 block
  • Do so with the blocking hand grabbing the wrist of the hand holding the knife
  • Spinning elbow turn back Aikido take down

Thrusting Knife #10

  • Begin with both hands held high
  • Double palm block to wrist
  • Grab lifting up and bending opponent’s wrist
  • Push and stab opponent with knife

Thrusting Knife #11

  • Right foot hinge away while left hand grabs wrist
  • Bend opponent’s wrist to 90 degrees
  • Turn wrist and point your thumbs to floor on the left side
  • Stab opponent on ground

Thrusting Knife #12

  • Left downward knife block followed with right
  • Circle opponent’s arm clock wise
  • Half moon back with right foot
  • Kick to the face and land right foot back
  • Slam wrist to ground
  • Drop left knee on opponent’s elbow

Thrusting Knife #13

  • Left palm followed with right knife hand block
  • Right hand grabs wrist left forearm to elbow
  • Left hand grabs wrist right forearm to back of hand ( disarm)
  • (Black belt ending…)
  • Right hand grabs wrist push down and to left
  • Left arm goes under opponent’s arm
  • Release right hand and grab left hand and pull down to arm bar
  • Right hand grabs neck and right knee to solar
  • Right fish hook to mouth pull in for takedown

Thrusting Knife #14

  • Left downward parry followed with right downward knife block while right foot twists in front of left
  • Right hand slips under opponent’s arm and bring to chest while left arm wraps around opponent’s neck
  • Right ridge hand to ribs
  • Right foot hinges away, then left legs hocks opponent down

Thrusting Knife #15 (.net #7)

  • Begin by standing opposite your partner, hands on guard, left foot forward
  • Your partner should have the knife in their right hand
  • Your partner executes a stabbing knife attack as they step toward you with their right foot
  • Pivot on your left foot as you step away from the attack with your right foot
  • Your left arm should be down at your side and slightly away from your body and your right arm should be up and close to your body
  • Deflect the attack in an arcing motion with your left forearm while grasping your partner’s right wrist to control their knife hand
  • Continue the arcing motion to bring your partner’s knife hand up and above your left shoulder
  • Now grab your partner’s arm with both hands
  • Bend your knees as you lean forward slightly and pull down on your partner’s arm to execute a break
  • Be extremely careful when practicing this move so as not to injure your partner
  • Release your right hand from your partner’s arm but be sure to maintain your grip with your left hand so as to control their knife hand
  • Execute an elbow strike to you partner’s kidney area
  • (OPTIONAL):
  • At this point you may choose to execute a right kick to your partner’s ribcage and then step out to an on guard position
  • Or, you may skip the kick and simply finish the technique here by releasing your partner’s knife hand and stepping out to an on guard position

Thrusting Knife #16

  • Your partner is in front of you and stabs straight at your midsection
  • Step off to your right while extending your left hand out to grab your partner’s wrist
  • Bring your right hand around over your head and shuto the inside of your partner’s elbow
  • Be sure that your partner bends forward from the impact of the strike
  • Do not hit your partner hard, but your partner should react as if you did
  • Shuto your partner’s neck with your right hand
  • Swing your right leg behind your partner’s right leg and perform an outer-reap take down
  • Use your right elbow as a chicken wing under your partner’s chin to help break their balance
  • Release your partner’s wrist, step back with your right leg
  • Execute a stomp kick to your partner’s ribs. Step back on guard away from your partner

Thrusting Knife #17

  • Left downward knife block followed with right
  • Circle opponent’s arm clock wise
  • Half moon forward bring opponent’s wrist to your right thigh
  • Left foot steps over break arm
  • Release opponent’s wrist while left hand grabs opponent’s hair and lift up right back two knuckle face kiai!

Thrusting Knife #18 (upward attack) (.net #1)

  • Both you and your partner should have your left foot forward
  • Your partner should hold the knife in their right hand
  • It is important when defending against a knife to keep your hands outward because you want to relax your attacker by giving them the sign of surrender
  • Your partner will step forward with their right foot as they attack you with an upward stabbing knife attack towards your body
  • Execute a downward iron fortress block as you use the momentum of the attack to help deflect the knife away from your body
  • It’s important to move the target area of your body away from the path of the knife while you execute the downward iron fortress block
  • As you straighten your body, move toward your partner so that your left foot is just behind their right foot
  • Check their knife arm with your left hand as you bring your right hand up on the inside of your partner’s right arm and strike your partner’s nose with a palm heel strike
  • Bring your right hand back toward you, bending your arm at the elbow so as to secure your partner’s right arm across your chest
  • At the same time strike your partner to the temple with a left palm heel strike
  • Wrap your hand around your partner’s face and rake their face as you draw your arm back in a circular motion, bringing your arm down and under your partner’s right arm
  • Back two knuckle strike to your partner’s jaw
  • Pivot your body away from your partner as you slide your left arm down their knife arm to their wrist and grab their wrist with your left hand, letting go of their knife arm with your right arm
  • Continue to pivot until you are standing so that your right foot is behind your partner’s right foot
  • As you do this, lift their knife arm up and over your head. Execute a right elbow strike to the kidney
  • Begin to bring your partner’s knife arm down
  • Execute a hock with your right leg
  • Continue to bring your partner’s knife arm down and execute a right roundhouse elbow strike to your partner’s chest
  • Right heel kick to the solar plexus
  • Step back and on guard

Thrusting Knife #19 (upward attack) (.net #9)

  • Both you and your partner should have your left foot forward
  • Your partner should hold the knife in their right hand
  • It is important when defending against a knife to keep your hands outward because you want to relax your attacker by giving them the sign of surrender
  • Your partner will step forward with their right foot as they attack you with an upward stabbing knife attack towards your body
  • Execute a downward iron fortress block as you use the momentum of the attack to help deflect the knife away from your body
  • It’s important to move the target area of your body away from the path of the knife while you execute the downward iron fortress block
  • As you straighten your body, move toward your partner so that your left foot is just behind their right foot
  • Bring your right hand up on the inside of your partner’s right arm
  • Once you do this you will notice that the knife in your partner’s right hand is now well away from your midsection
  • Your right hand should now be in perfect position to strike your partner’s nose with a palm heel strike
  • Bring your right hand back toward you, bending your arm at the elbow so as to secure your partner’s right arm across your chest
  • At the same time strike your partner to the temple with a left palm heel strike…bending your partner down. Be very careful
  • Once you have your partner’s knife arm across your chest it can easily be broken
  • Grab and secure the knife with your left hand
  • Bring your left foot up to your right foot as you begin to move your right foot back and turn toward your partner
  • Make sure that your partner’s knife hand is secured in your left hand
  • Continue to move your right foot back until it is positioned on the instep of your partner’s right foot
  • Once again, be sure that your partner’s knife hand is still secured in your left hand
  • Bring your right hand up and around in a circular motion…and execute a right palm heel strike to the spine
  • From here, execute a forward sweep with your right leg…taking your partner down
  • Step back toward your partner’s head
  • Finish the technique with a stomp to their head and…Run away from your partner as fast as you can

Thrusting Knife #20

  • Left downward knife block followed with right
  • Circle opponent’s arm clock wise
  • Half moon forward bring opponent’s wrist to your right thigh
  • Left foot steps over break arm move right leg back fall back to ground and into arm bar

Thrusting Knife #21

  • (High Stab) double upward cross block while left foot sun steps forward
  • Bring opponent’s elbow down on your left shoulder
  • Bring over head to right shoulder break again
  • Arm bar then take down

Thrusting Knife #22

  • (High stab) double upward cross block while right foot sun steps forward
  • Step under arm turn knife back to opponent and stab

Thrusting Knife #23

  • Left downward knife block followed with right
  • Circle opponent’s arm clock wise
  • Half moon back with right foot
  • Kick face land right foot back, then left rev crescent over opponent’s head into axe take down
  • Keep holding opponent’s wrist stab

Thrusting Knife #24 (behind) (.net #3)

  • Stand in a neutral position with your partner standing behind you
  • Your partner will hold the knife in their right hand and touch the point of the knife to your back and grab your left shoulder with their left hand
  • When you feel the knife in your back, turn quickly in a clockwise direction, pivoting on your right foot
  • Block your partner’s knife hand with your right arm as you turn
  • Keep the back of your right hand pressing against your partner’s knife hand as you grab their knife arm by the inside of their elbow with your left hand
  • Cup your partner’s right wrist with your right hand
  • Still holding your partner’s elbow, push their knife hand underneath their own arm, holding firmly to their wrist
  • Wrist lock. Use good control so that you do not injure your partner’s wrist
  • The wrist lock will loosen your partner’s grip on the knife, at which point you can take the knife away from your partner with your right hand
  • Once you have taken the knife away from your partner, step back with your right foot and cut your partner with the knife as you pull back and away from them

Thrusting Knife #25 (Over head or Psycho stabbing knife)

  • Stand opposite your partner, hands on guard, left foot forward
  • As your partner steps toward you with their right foot and executes an overhead stabbing knife attack with their right arm, step in slightly with your left foot and execute an upward scissor block making sure that your right arm is on top
  • Also make sure there is a small gap between your arms where they come in contact with your partner’s arm
  • Adjust your left foot forward slightly and step back with your right foot, pivoting on your left foot
  • As you step back allow your partner’s arm to slide between your arms as you guide it so that it is resting on your left shoulder
  • Hook their wrist with your left hand and, using your right hand on top of your left hand, apply pressure to their arm to break the elbow. Use good control when practicing this so that you do not injure your partner’s elbow
  • Holding your partner’s wrist in your left hand, execute an elbow strike with your right arm to your partner’s kidney area
  • You will need to shift your feet slightly to make sure the elbow strike has power
  • Bring your right arm down and then around your partner to execute a ridge hand strike to their throat
  • Take your partner down with a right leg hock
  • Be aware of their knife hand when you do this
  • Use your left hand to press on your partner’s shoulder as you take them down to guide the knife hand away from you
  • Right thrust punch to the joint in the jaw

Thrusting Knife #26 (Defend with club)

  • Begin by standing opposite your partner in a neutral stance with the club in both hands across you
  • Your partner should have the knife in their right hand, left foot forward
  • Your partner executes a stabbing knife attack as they step toward you with their right foot
  • Pivot on your left foot as you step away from the attack with your right foot
  • Use the club to deflect the knife away from your body in an arcing motion
  • Continue the arcing motion as you redirect your partner’s knife hand up and above your left shoulder
  • Release the club with your left hand and at the same time bring the club across your partner’s knife hand, smashing the knife, and down, and grasp your partner’s right arm with your, now free, left hand
  • Now you are in control of their knife hand
  • Continue through with the club between your partner’s legs and strike them in the groin
  • Now bring the club back up and behind you to strike your partner in the throat
  • Notice you are still controlling their knife hand with your left hand
  • (OPTIONAL):
  • Release your partner’s knife hand as you pivot around so that you are now standing behind and slightly to the side of your partner
  • Grasp the club with both hands
  • Using the club take your partner down as you step out of the way
  • Step out and away from your partner to finish the technique

Thrusting Knife #27 (.net #10)

  • Your partner is in front of you and stabs straight at your midsection

Thrusting Knife #28 (.net #12) (Front with a grab or hostage)

  • Your partner grabs you with their left hand on your lapel and their right hand holding a knife across your throat
  • Pivot to your right, allowing your left shoulder to come across your partner’s arm and pull the knife away from your throat
  • Your right foot should be on your heel with your toes up
  • Both hands raise up on your left side
  • Your right hand is going to grab your partner’s right wrist from underneath while your left arm is striking with the forearm to a point just above your partner’s elbow
  • Be careful, as striking to this point can damage your partners elbow if done too hard
  • Using your partner’s elbow as a locking point, bend your partner over while pulling with your right hand to complete the arm lock
  • Strike to your partner’s temple with an inverted palm strike
  • Drop your partner’s right arm and pivot to your left
  • You may want to keep your right arm on your partner’s back to keep you in contact with him
  • Kick through with your right shin to your partner’s right shin. Be careful with this as the shins are sensitive
  • Also realize that this will take your partner down forward, so do it slow so your partner does not injure their face or wrists
  • When your partner goes to the ground, shuffle backwards and deliver a right blade kick/stomp on the back of your partner’s head
