Overhead Club Defense Techniques

Overhead Club#1

  • Assume horse stance left foot steps forward with overhead cross block
  • Redirect club to opponent’s groin (clockwise rotation)
  • Left hand grabs club then pivot clockwise 90 degrees hit opponent in back of head with club Kiai!

Overhead Club #2

  • Step forward with your left foot, closing the distance between you and your partner, and deliver an overhead cross block to your partner’s striking arm
  • Redirect your partner’s striking arm by circling it down and through their legs
  • Thrust punch to the ribs
  • Thrust punch to the head Kiai!

Overhead Club #3

  • Assume left horse stance left foot steps forward with overhead cross block
  • Redirect club past opponent’s groin (clockwise rotation)
  • Box step with right foot to side horse stance (back to the opponent) lift opponent’s arm up high grab club with right hand grab opponent’s wrist with left hand
  • Box step with left foot to face back opponent left hand brings arm back behind their back right hand uses club to strike opponents right knee Kiai!

Overhead Club #4

  • Assume horse stance left foot steps forward with overhead cross block
  • Redirect club clockwise and step away with left foot (like DM 7) left hand grabs wrist right hand grab club
  • Right side blade kick to ribs Kiai! while pulling on club land in twist then step away

Overhead Club #5

  • Assume horse stance, left foot steps forward with overhead cross block
  • Redirect club clockwise and step away with left foot (like DM 7) left hand grabs club right hand grab wrist
  • Right side blade kick to ribs while pulling on club
  • Toss the opponent’s arm to your right with your left hand, right foot lands next to opponent
  • Spin counterclockwise and face opponents back (should be behind opponent)
  • Holding club with right hand, hit the opponent’s right knee with the club (swinging the club from right to left) and opponent’s back of head with the club(swinging the club from left to right), Kiai!

Overhead Club #6

  • Assume horse stance, as the opponent clubs in, left foot steps forward with #5 block and left thrust punch to the ribs at the same time
  • Right hand delivers the club to left hand in a clockwise circulation, and the left hand grabs the opponent’s wrist
  • Execute right hand cross hand shuto to the neck, then grab the opponent’s right side of neck, pull the opponent down and the right rising knee to the solar plexus
  • Right hand grabs clubs and strikes the back of opponents head, Kiai!

Overhead Club #7

  • Assume horse stance and left foot steps forward with #6 block
  • Right hand reaches under the left arm for the club and pulls it out
  • With back side of the club, swing club left to right and right to left (hitting opponent’s ribs)
  • Right hand with the club hooks the opponents right wrist pulling downward. Left hand checks on right shoulder, and right hand delivers upward strike with the club, Kiai!

Overhead Club #8

  • Assume horse stance and left foot steps forward with a #6 block and a right palm to the face
  • Right half moon forward with ccw pivot
  • Right hand goes under the opponent’s arm and grab your own arm for arm break Kiai!

Overhead Club #9

  • Assume horse stance, left foot steps forward with a #5 block
  • Left ridge hand to inside opponent’s elbow pin to your chest
  • Right half-moon forward the ccw pivot and right hand grabs for wrist for lock left hand pushes opponent’s elbow
  • Right hand takes club hit face with “butt end” Kiai!

Overhead Club #10

  • Assume horse stance, left foot steps forward with block #6
  • Right hand goes under opponents arm and grabs your own wrist pull down for take down Kiai! (release hands before take down in the dojo)

Overhead Club #11

  • Assume horse stance, left foot steps forward overhead cross block clear opponent’s arm
  • Double hammers to solar plexus and back
  • Double hammer groin and coccyx bone
  • Both hands squeeze opponent as you move hands up the body to jaw and back or head twist ccw Kiai!

Overhead Club #12

  • Assume horse stance, left foot steps forward with Block #5
  • Left hand goes under block to opponent’s throat, glancing the opponents arm right cheek left hand grabs the opponents neck
  • Pull down the opponent with the right rising knee kneeing the solar plexus and as right foot lands, execute left downward elbow to the opponent’s spine
  • Left hand goes around the opponent’s head, grabs the chin, and pulls over to your left for the take down
  • As the opponent falls, right hand does a shuto to opponent’s throat Kiai!

Overhead Club #13

  • Assume horse stance left steps forward with a overhead cross block
  • Right hand grabs opponent’s wrist, executes left hammer strike to the opponents nose
  • Right hand then pulls the arm down as the left hand executes upward forearm, breaking the opponent’s arm
  • Left arm executes left inverted hand hammer to the opponent’s groin and the right arm pulls the opponent’s arm more to unbalance him/her
  • Left hand wraps around the opponents neck, moving the hand clockwise to flip the opponent
  • When the opponent is on the floor, execute right spinning reverse axe kick to the groin Kiai!

Overhead Club #14

  • Assume horse stance, as the opponent clubs in, duck under the opponent’s arm pop up next to his or her shoulder execute right cross hand shuto to the neck and right side blade kick to the knee simultaneously buckling the opponent’s right knee
  • Step back to face 5:00 with right foot
  • Execute double rakes to the opponents face right then left then pull opponent to the floor
  • Execute right spinning reverse axe kick to groin.

Overhead Club #15

  • Assume horse stance, as the opponent clubs in, left foot steps forward and hit the opponents armpit with right shoulder
  • Hug the opponent with both arms, left foot buckles the opponents right knee
  • Slap out on floor with opponent on top of you and then roll to your right to get on top of the opponent Kiai!

Overhead Club #16

  • Assume horse stance, as the opponent clubs in, left steps forward with overhead cross block (left hand over right hand)
  • Redirect club past opponents groin (counter clockwise rotation)
  • Box step with left to side horse stance (with back to opponent) lift opponent’s arm up high, bring the opponent down like Club 10 but with right hand only and do a wrist lock. Kiai!

Overhead Club #17

  • Assume horse stance, as the opponent clubs in, left foot steps forward with overhead cross block
  • Right hand grabs the club left hand roundhouse elbow to opponent’s forearm
    Spin clockwise and hit the opponent’s head with the club Kiai!

Overhead Club #18

  • Stand opposite your partner
  • As your partner begins to come toward you with an overhead club attack you bring your arms to an on-guard position
  • Move toward your partner and to the outside of the striking arm
  • Deliver a pressing palm block with your right hand to your partners forearm as you slide your right hand down slightly to your partner’s wrist, deliver another pressing palm block with your left hand to your partner’s tricep
  • Let your right hand continue in a circular motion to deliver a ridge hand strike to your partner’s solar plexus
  • Bring your right leg through and reap your partner’s right leg as you deliver a ridge hand strike with your right hand to their neck
  • Fall with your partner to the ground
  • Your left leg should be under your partner and you should be on your left side when you hit the ground
  • Keep your right arm across their chest and your right hand can grab their shoulder close to their neck to control the fall
  • Once you are on the ground, grab your partner’s right hand (their striking hand) with your left hand to secure it back across their neck
  • At the same time wrap your partner’s torso with your legs in a snake hold
  • Now that you have your partner secured, pull your right arm away from their neck and back in preparation for your next strike
  • Finish the technique with a thrust punch to your partner’s temple and Kiai!

Overhead Club #19

  • Assume horse stance, as the opponent clubs in, left foot steps forward with double tiger mouths catching opponents arm
  • Spin clockwise on left foot and hit the opponent’s forearm with your inside forearm taking the opponent down with Kiai!

Overhead Club #20

  • Assume horse stance, as the opponent clubs in, left foot steps forward with right glancing roundhouse elbow to ribs
  • Execute right rear elbow to back with right roundhouse knee then right tiger’s mouth to throat with right interior reap taking opponent down
  • Finish with right roundhouse to solar plexus then right side blade to throat with Kiai!

Overhead Club #21 (two handed)

  • Stand opposite your partner, left foot forward
  • Your partner should hold the club in both hands over their right shoulder
  • Your partner will step in with their right foot as they execute a two handed overhead club attack
  • As your partner attacks, step left toward 10:30 o’clock, bringing your left hand up as a check
  • Execute a right upward forearm deflection of your partner’s strike
  • Keep your left hand up as a check. Right flamingo stance
  • Right side blade kick to your partner’s knee
  • Use good control here so that you do not injure your partner
  • This will take your partner down
  • Right shuto strike to the back of your partner’s neck to finish the technique.

Overhead Club #22

  • Stand opposite your partner
  • Your partner should have the club in their right hand
  • Your partner will step toward you with their right foot as they execute a right overhead club attack
  • Step in toward your partner with your right foot and execute an upward scissor block so that your left arm is above your right arm
  • Grab your partner’s right wrist with your left hand and bring their right arm down as you execute a right shuto strike to the side of the neck
  • Maintain your grip on your partner’s right wrist – keeping the club away from you
  • Right back two knuckle strike to the solar plexus
  • Right back two knuckle strike to the chin, lifting the head up
  • Remember to keep holding your partner’s right wrist with your left hand
  • Circle your right arm around and up beneath your partner’s right elbow breaking the elbow
  • Be sure to use good control so you do not injure your partner’s elbow
  • Redirect your partner’s right arm and the club over your head.. and down, bending them forward and releasing your grip on their wrist
  • Keep your left hand pressed against your partner’s right tricep to make sure the club is kept away from you
  • Continue the circular motion of your right arm and execute a right shuto strike to the back of the neck
  • Sweep your partner’s right leg with your right leg…so that they fall forward to finish the technique.

Overhead Club #23 (like #11)

  • Stand opposite your partner
  • Your partner should have the club in their right hand
  • As your partner begins to come toward you with an overhead club attack you bring your arms to an on-guard position
  • We’re assuming that your partner steps toward you with their right foot as they execute their attack
  • Step forward with your left foot, closing the distance between you and your partner, so that your left foot is outside and behind their right foot
  • Upward block with your left forearm
  • Remember to block at the elbow so that they cannot bend their arm and hit you with the club
  • Upward block with your right forearm as you adjust your body slightly forward
  • This movement will uproot your partner and put them off balance
  • Your partner should now be on your center line directly in front of you, giving you easy access to both front and rear targets
  • Circle both of your arms down and around and execute double palm heel strikes to your partner’s groin and coccyx
  • Double palm heels strikes to the spine and solar plexus
  • Double tiger’s mouth strikes to the neck and throat
  • Grab your partner’s head and chin. Spin the head, breaking the neck
  • Use good control with this move so as not to injure your partner’s neck.

Overhead Club #24 (like #9)

  • Your partner begins to swing the club as your hands form an on-guard position
  • Step forward with your left foot and perform a double-arm block to the outside of your partner’s right arm. Keep your hands in a shuto position
  • Your right arm drops to hook the partner’s right wrist with your right hand
  • Your left forearm is above your partner’s right elbow
  • Strike to your partner’s temple with a palm strike
  • You should find that your left hand slides up to do this
  • Pivot your body toward your partner as your right arms delivers a forearm to the back of your partner’s neck
  • Swing your right hand up toward the ceiling in a big circle, continuing underneath your partner’s right arm to strike their groin with a ridge hand
  • Slide up the front center-line of your partner with a tiger’s mouth to their throat
  • Slide your left arm underneath your partner’s left arm. as you step behind them with your left foot
  • Continue pivoting 180 degrees on your left foot hooking your partner’s left arm with your left arm
  • Take your partner down by reaping their left leg with your left leg
  • Finish with a right punch to your partner’s temple.
