Side Club Defense Techniques

Side Club #1

  • Assume horse stance
  • Left foot half-moons forward with block #2
  • Wrap opponents arm with your left arm
  • Execute right thrust punch to solar plexus then to face Kiai!

Side Club #2

  • Assume horse stance
  • Right foot “hinges” forward to left foot forward half moon facing opponents arm while executing double knife hand block to opponent’s arm
  • Then execute double shutos to the neck and Kiai!

Side Club #3

  • Assume horse stance
  • Right foot hinges into left half moon facing opponent’s arm with left knife hand block and right forearm to chest
  • Pivot CCW on left foot while pulling club from opponent with right hand
  • Stop in original position club opponent’s right knee then head (zig-Zag) Kiai!

Side Club #4

  • Assume horse stance
  • Right foot hinges into left half moon facing opponent’s arm with double knife hand blocks
  • Grab the arm pointing opponent’s elbow downward (opponent’s palm up) with right rising knee to break
  • Right pinning kick to opponent’s knee
  • Right hand cross hand shut to the neck, and left thrust punch to the temple, Kiai!

Side Club #5

  • Assume horse stance
  • Right foot hinges into left half moon facing opponent’s arm with scissor block
  • Left hand high right hand low duck and carry opponents arm over while pivoting to right arms drop to sides
  • Shuffle in execute double forearm strikes behind the right arm
  • Take down to the left (leg hock if needed)
  • Left cross hand shuto then right thrust punch to the face if needed
  • Kiai!

Side Club #6

  • Assume horse stance
  • Right foot hinges forward into left half-moon facing opponent’s arm with scissor block left hand low and right hand high
  • Left hand pins club to your body right hand cross hand shuto to neck
  • Grab right rising knee to face
  • Left hand releases club hand and delivers circular downward elbow with Kiai!

Side Club #7

  • Assume horse stance
  • Right foot hinges into left half-moon facing opponent’s arm with left palm down and right upward forearm
  • Right hand grabs shoulder step in and execute shoulder through finish with right spear poke to the throat Kiai!

Side Club #8

  • Stand opposite your partner in a fighting stance, arms on guard, left foot forward
  • Your partner should stand in a neutral stance with their right hand holding the club
  • Your partner will step toward you with their right foot and execute a side club attack with their right arm
  • As they come toward you, execute a left forearm block to their right arm making sure to block slightly below the elbow so that they cannot bend their elbow and continue their attack
  • As you block, step in toward your partner with your right foot
  • Execute a right hammer strike to your partner’s right bicep. This will bring their club arm down. When you first begin to practice this technique you may practice these first moves slowly and individually. Once you feel comfortable with them you will put them all together so that the block, the step forward and the hammer strike all happen together in one smooth move
  • Right circular back fist to your partner’s face
  • Follow up with a left palm heel to the face
  • Right thrust punch to the solar plexus
  • Cross hand shuto strike to the throat
  • Circle your right hand around to execute a right palm strike to your partner’s jaw as you step back with your left foot
  • Continuing the momentum from the palm strike to the jaw, execute a right hammer strike to the groin
  • Right back kick to the solar plexus
  • Cross out and return to an on guard position to finish the technique

Side Club #9

  • Stand opposite your partner, hands on guard
  • Your partner has the club in their right hand
  • Your partner executes a right side club attack
  • As your partner attacks, step in toward them with your right foot
  • At the same time block your partner’s right arm with a left knife hand block to their wrist and a right leopard’s paw strike to their bicep simultaneously
  • Execute a left inverted palm to your partner’s jaw
  • Follow this by a right tiger’s mouth to their throat
  • Execute a left cross hand shuto to their throat
  • Finish with a right driving palm to your partner’s face

Side Club #10

  • Stand opposite your partner in a fighting stance, left foot forward, hands on guard
  • Your partner will start in a neutral stance or they may begin standing with their left foot forward, holding the club in their right hand
  • As they execute their side club attack they will step toward you with their right foot
  • As your partner comes toward you with a side club attack you will step in toward your partner with your right foot as you pivot with your left foot
  • At the same time you will execute a left outward knife hand block to your partner’s forearm and a right forearm block to your partner’s bicep
  • Grab your partner’s right wrist with your left hand to keep their club arm in your control
  • As you do this execute a whipping back fist strike to your partner’s temple with your right arm
  • Continue your whipping back fist strike through your target and around in a circular motion
  • Use your left hand to twist your partner’s right arm slightly counterclockwise so that their elbow joint is now vulnerable
  • Bring your right arm up underneath your partner’s right elbow – breaking the elbow joint. Use good control when practicing this so as not to injure your partner’s elbow! Deliver a right elbow strike to your partner’s ribs, still holding on to their right arm with your left hand
  • Reach up with your right hand and grab your partner by the shoulder
  • Execute a right leg hock…taking your partner down to the ground
  • Right ax kick to the ribs and step over your partner
  • Twist your partner’s right wrist slightly counterclockwise making the elbow joint vulnerable once again
  • Break your partner’s elbow against your left knee
  • Again, be extremely careful when practicing a break so as not to injure your partner
  • To finish this technique, simultaneously drop your right knee to your partner’s solar plexus and deliver a right leopard’s paw strike to their throat

Side Club #11

  • Slip under opponents arm like (DM#3)
  • Right ridge hand to throat
  • Step behind opponent
  • Left ridge hand to throat pull down and choke Kiai!
